Two Pieces by Gertrude Stein
Robotic Performance
Pieces based on "Play" and "Bon Marche Weather"
Developed in
Conjunction with Arthur Holmburg of the Brandeis University Theater
Dept.
These pieces were developed for a program entitled "Gertrude Stein
Entirely", which took place at the Spingold Theater of Brandeis
University. The program included two plays performed by humans as
well as the two robotic works.
Working with Arthur Holmburg of the Brandeis Theater Dept., we are
planning a continuing series of Gertrude Stein works that will go on
tour to various cities.
Play - Two robots dance together, play
tag-like games, and eventually destroy their "playpen" in a
performance set to poetry by G. Stein and 70's disco. The original
performance featured two robots in their own space, and subsequent
performances have brought the audiences into the playpen with the
robots.
Performances:
November, 1996 at the Spingold Theater "Gertrude Stein Entirely"
program.
February, 1998 at the Annenberg Center "Annenberg Dialogues"
technology in the arts workshop.
Bon Marche Weather - an ominous piece set
to G. Stein poetry and the grotesque fifth movement of Berliotz's
Symphonie Fantastique. Two Pioneers advance slowly to
an area where a group of smaller robots are milling about,
occasionally stopping, glancing at each other in trepidation. Upon
arrival, they watch the small robots until the intensity of the poetry
and music and the strange scene they are observing frightens them into
a frenzied retreat... etc. A precisely choreographed ballet of
sorts.
Performances:
November, 1996 at the Spingold Theater "Gertrude Stein Entirely"
program.
