Clara Yang was born in Tianjin, China. She and her family immigrated to the United States in 1996. Currently, Clara is a scholarship student of Claude Frank at the Yale School of Music. In 2004 Clara graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California, where she was a scholarship student of John Perry. Her awards included first place in the Beethoven Competition in San Jose, California, the San Francisco Chopin Competition, MTAC solo and concerto competitions, the CAPMT concerto competition, and the Olympiad of the Arts piano competition. She received the grand prize in the MTAC solo competition in 2000. She was awarded the Genevieve Lassere Scholarship and the Sherman Clay Prize. Clara was listed on the National Dean's List. In 2002 she won second place in the Pacific Symphony Concerto Competition. Clara was a finalist in the Stravinsky International Piano Competition. She was chosen to participate in the 2004 Sydney International Piano Competition.

Clara has performed in the United States, China, Holland, and Australia. Her performance in "The Grand Piano Show" was braodcast nationwide, and her performance was heard on ABC Classical Station in Australia. In the summer of 2002, she performed as a soloist with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra under Carl St. Clair. She has also performed with the California Youth Symphony under Leo Eyler. She was a scholarship student in the Aspen Music Festival and the Holland Music Sessions. Clara performed in master classes conduced by Gabriel Chodos, Lee Kum-sing, Lori Sims, John Perry, and Daniel Pollack. She has performed in chamber music master classes of Menahem Pressler, the Emerson String Quartet, the Ysaye String Quartet and the Raphael Trio. Her former teachers included Hans Boepple, Guang-ren Zhou (Central Conservatory, Beijing), and Hui-li Li (Central Conseravatory). She has also worked with Jean David Coen, Lee Kum-sing, Karl Heinz Kammerling, and Herbert Stessin.
